India is one of the largest sub continents of the world. As such Indian culture is fascinating and diverse. Many Western people often travel to India in order to experience it and so it is worth looking at what they have to offer.

The film industry is probably one of the most famous aspects of their culture. It is often informally referred to as Bollywood, although some Indian film makers find the tag somewhat dismissive. The industry is larger than Hollywood and is known chiefly for their bold, colourful films.

One aspect of the culture that is very important is the family. There is a very traditional setup with extended family often living together. Respecting elders is a key part of this. Sometimes they even kiss the feet of their elders as a mark of respect and a request to be blessed.

They also have a very open and welcoming attitude towards guests. Even the poorest people in India will do their utmost to make sure their guests are well looked after.

The tropical climate is one reason why Indian fashions are often bold. The sari is a great example, especially at weddings. They tend to be very bright and eye catching. They often wear elaborate jewellery and have a symbolic mark on their forehead called a bindi. These are probably one of the most distinctive visual pictures of Indian culture and are often the first thing people think of.

While a lot of Western influences are being embraced in India, Indian culture itself remains distinctive. In recent years, there has been an exchange of ideas and Indian imagery has influenced a lot of Western art, the most obvious example being some of the later musical work of the Beatles after a visit to the Maharashi. It is worth looking online to see some of the beautiful art, music and fashion that India has to offer.
